This would be considered a effective consumer oriented sales promotional item. Reason why is because it is made available for any customer to get. This booklet is placed out in the open to draw in new and old customers to increase the amount of sales during this time span that the booklet runs. The customer can keep getting this booklet for as long as the sale runs.

This would be considered an ineffective sonsumer oriented sales promotion. This coupon is only given out to customers that shop at shopko on a regulair basis. It is not made available to the public. Other companies like Kohls, or Petco do similar couponing or sales strictly to loyal customers. This type of coupon is ment to get the customer to come in an get their $10 off their purchase but is ment to get the customer in the door to hopefully spend more money to help increse the amout of sales. The company is not aiming at bringing in new customers with this promotion.

This picture I had taken off of a websit I found with examples of trade oriented sales. This would be consided an effective trade oriented sales promotion. Reason as to why whould be because of the size, its located out in the open for all to see. The customer is able to get all the supplys they would need on sale under this products label for tacos. There is multiple purchases available here for the customer and it is all driven to make one item.

This would be considered an ineffective trade oriented promotion. Yes it does come with a mail in coupon to help you save money but it wasnt advertised anywhere. I had to go find the product on the shelf where there was no type of stand for it and it just happened to come with a deal. It was not advertised well and had I not been looking for this specific product I would never had known about the special coupon.

For this weeks assignment I choose to use the direct advertising piece from the Voice since I throw out all my other junk mail the second I receive it. It does capture my attention since it has a range of colors on it with various font sizes. However it doesnt reach me as a consumer since I dont see a need for the news to be paid for when I can get it on google or yahoo for free. The mail piece does mention how often it is updated and what a low cost it is but it doesnt give me a need to go through them. Overall though it does a nice job of showing what they are about and I like the examples on the right side of their paper.

For my billboard I chose to use the Riverview billboard that is out on hyw 54 coming in to Rapids. It was the most detailed I could see from that side of the road.
I believe that ad spending has increased on outdoor spaces because more and more people are on the go. With jobs being on the decline most people are finding themselfs having to travel to find jobs. Where are most people duing these times? On the road. So advertisers are taking notice of this and are spending great deals of money to advertise on highways with alot of open area so that you are forced to notice their ad and they are posing where ever else there is space like on buldings, buses, chairs, etc.

BBC America
I decided to watch BBCA which over the last 6 months I've grown to like more and more. There shows span from Europe which are more original to me and aim towards what I look for in shows which is science fiction. I chose to use my hour of watching TV to watch one of my favorite shows, Doctor Who.
For those that have never hear of BBCA; BBCA shows programs such as Top Gear (a show about people pushing the limits of speed in all forms of vehicles), Doctor Who (about a time traveler and his adventures), Sherlock (A show about a modern day Sherlock Holmes) and many others. The SyFy channel does many of the same shows shown on BBCA only reenacted with American actors.
Since BBCA offers all different types of programs (documentary, science fiction, reality, drama, etc.), it shows a wide range of commercials. Some of these can be found on other major cable channels like The CW, Spike, and Adult Swim. While others can only be found only on the BBCA network. Below I've included some of the commercials I've only seen advertised on the BBCA since they are promo just for their shows.

Since BBCA stands for the Better British Channel America, their commercials for the most part show advertisements for many of the companies found in the US only with British actors. Having said that there are many similarities to our commercials like advertisements for Dyson vacuums or Ford vehicles which are the same ads found on the other major networks. Some like I said however have British actors or actresses, below are some commercials depicting what I just said.

  • Length: Most comercials shown on BBCA are the same lengh as any other commercial, however some last more than a minute to a minute and a half. Those commercials that are longer usually are promoting one of their long lasting shows or what is new to the channel.
  • Format: Like I said above many of their commercials are the same as any other channels with the exception of some of them being directed at their demographics or shows.
  • Creativity: As far as creativity goes they are very similar to any other station unless they are advertising their shows. A great example is the link above about Whovians which Im proud to admit Im one of.
  • Objectives: Their goal is to advertise to any and all demographics viewing their programming so like I've said above they show ads that aim to both Americans and British viewers.

Sex Appeal Case Study

If sex appeal is used properly I do believe that it does have a redeeming value to it. The use of sex in ads if done properly make you think that if you get what they are selling you will get that hot woman along with it or that they will come flocking to you. This never happens of course but it's the idea that sells you on the product. However if you're trying to sell me something completely unrelated to sex, then chances are the ad would fail with me. For example if I was shown an ad depicting a women with little to no cloths on trying to sell me diapers id be like what does that have to do with having a kid. It's not like when you have a kid you get to go sleeping with beautiful women. An example of where an ad had sex appeal in it and it worked on me is shown in the link below. Almost every time I go to the bar and order a beer I remember this ad.

I think the major thing ad companies need to keep in mind when creating these ads is that they are selling the idea of sex. Now they can do this without having to show a woman or man completely naked. just the thought of a woman or man naked would get the job done. They also need to keep in mind that children are most likely going to see these ads so in my opinion I don't think they should show anything past what a child could see on the beach. I think that if they kept this thought in mind they would be fine. Also to stay objective whether you show too much or too little skin there is always going to be someone offended.

In my opinion I feel that if an ad company can find what makes people tick and then can use that to sell their product then by all means use it to their advantage. I don't think ad companies should feel sorry what so ever if you are dumb enough to by a product thinking you're going to become more popular or get more women in your life just because you use this hot new item. People need to be more intelligent and remember that the product is just the product, the commercial is just the commercial. The ad is just there to trigger something inside of you. If I see something on the internet that peaks my interest I'm not going into the purchase of the product with a false belief that I'm going to benefit from the product in any other way then what the products use is. Below is an example of a new ad for bras. When I see it I'm like cool sexy new braw, not I'm going get this and a hot woman will fall into my life.

Chapter 4 - Segmentation, Targeting and the Marketing Mix

Culture:
Can influence our buying patterns depending on where we place our values. In the case of Barbie, we have outfits for her to look sexy and thin, this shows our values. For Islamic people their Barbie wares the cloths that are valued over there, also on the box it states what values their Barbie has for family and religion.

Subculture:
Subcultures can influence consumer behavior since we all have different beliefs and values. Subcultures are small groups that make up a large group. There's no way to make something appeal to everyone so they have ads or ways of advertising to select groups. In the case of my example you wouldn't find a jock reading a magazine about Goths.

Social class:
Depending on your social standing, you may make different decisions. For instance if you are a Harvard graduate and make $200,000 a year, I highly doubt you would be found shopping at Aldi's, you would be seen some place more upscale.

Reference Groups:
This is a way we use to help make decision. For example if we were to decide to go out to eat a restaurant, we first would look to others to give us their opinion on it. After seeing an example similar to mine, you would first look up reviews on this company to make sure you were making a wise decision before loading the family up.

Situational determinants:
This would be when your shopping or watching something and it catches your eye where you find it appealing by use or design. My example given could appeal to a large group of people for a variety of different uses. It could be the design is attractive, someone thought it would be funny, someone that drinks a lot, etc.
